A Veteran's Acupuncture Treatment

My name is Fred Gutierrez. I was a Petty Officer aboard a submarine in the Pacific Fleet during the Vietnam War through 1978. I was also the ship's top hand machinist and ship's diver. Traumatic events happened to me when I was very young and I developed PTSD. While in the military, I also encountered other traumatic events that made my PTSD difficult to cope with and often debilitating.

Recently, I began acupuncture treatments at Summerville Community Acupuncture with Mary Margaret Dobson. Our goal was to treat my chronic pain and partial paralysis, but I also found out that acupuncture can be used to treat PTSD. The treatment for PTSD was developed by the Surgeon General's Office to treat soldiers in the field suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI's).

The results that I have had from these weekly PTSD treatments have been amazing. For well over 50 years, I suffered from flashbacks and anxiety related to my PTSD. With the PTSD treatment, a good visual was that the acupuncture needles became spiritual antenna. With prayer and belief, I was able to lay the nightmares and anxiety at God's feet in the form of a sacrificial offering.

In recent months, I have had fewer nightmares and fewer anxiety attacks. When an anxiety attack occurs, the duration of them has been shorter and I have been able to put them behind me faster. Acupuncture has improved the quality of my life considerably. I highly recommend acupuncture to all of my fellow veterans suffering from PTSD and other pain issues.

Born and raised in South Carolina, one gets used to the pollen headaches but it was the migraines I could not deal with. I tried different medications that eased the pain but never got rid of it.

In my early adult life I was in a car accident where I was hit from behind. I then began therapy and when they found out I also suffered from migraines they suggested acupuncture. I was very hesitant but I figured it was worth a try. I started feeling relaxed about it after my first session. I had about four treatments and in the end the results were I have never suffered another migraine. Another benefit I eventually quit smoking after smoking for 11 years. I would highly recommend acupuncture to anyone who suffers from migraines.

Having raised two strong boys now serving in the military if they should come back from their tours in the military like having posttraumatic stress, or any other problems I will see and make sure my sons will get acupuncture treatments.

After much research I now see the veterans are being treated with acupuncture in the military. I am a firm believer in acupuncture as I have seen what it has done for other people.
